In the fifth stage of the season in Miami, Fernando Alonso climbed the podium for the fourth time. Aston Martin boss Mike Krak said the team doesn’t take top-three finishes for granted.
Mike Krak: “We are not used to it and keep our feet on the ground. In Formula 1, podiums are not self-evident or self-evident. To achieve such a result, you have to work hard – we have very strong and professional rivals, so if we do not constantly give 100% in all areas, we will not rise to the podium.
Fernando Alonso started second in Miami, but during the race his main rival for third place at the finish was Carlos Sainz. On the 18th lap, Ferrari attempted a “cut”, but Aston Martin did not respond and did not call their driver into the pits.
“We followed our plan and didn’t react to the undercut because we wanted to create an advantage with the tyres,” Krak continues. “We must not forget that at this stage we did not know how far the hard tires could go. We didn’t want to overdo it and get back into traffic after a pit stop because the tires would wear out quickly in traffic.
I think the team did a great job with the strategy. Our tire engineers told us to stay on track and later in the race this decision paid off. It was a logical decision because it is better not to lose ground in the beginning of the race. In addition, there was a risk that the safety car would leave and if we were to run on the wrong Hard tires at that time, our position on the track would be at great risk.
