On Thursday, testing in Barcelona continued in Formula 2. Rainy weather forced the racers to adjust their plans and start the day with wet tyres.
Brad Benavidez took to the wet track first and soon the session was halted by the first red flags. Clement Novalak crashed in turn two and got stuck in the gravel.
After the Trident driver’s car was evacuated, testing continued, but rain intensified. The author of the second red flag was Jack Crawford, who was flipped at turn four. The session was halted for a third time after Roy Nissany hit the gravel, but the PHM Racing by Charouz driver was able to drive to the pits under his own power.
The fourth time, the red flags appeared an hour before the end of the session, when Dennis Hauger stopped on the track after a turn in turn 11 after a turn in turn 11. The next time the morning session was interrupted by red flags was due to a stoppage by Enzi Fittipaldi at turn six. Half an hour before the end, Ralph Boschung turned around in the tenth corner.
By this point, the rain had already stopped, track conditions were improving rapidly and some riders switched to slicks. The fastest time was set by Kush Maini with a lap time of 1:28.049 seconds.
After a one-hour break, testing continued into the afternoon session. The track was dry so there were far fewer starts than in the morning – red flags appeared twice after Crawford turned tenth and Duane turned sixth.
Usually the riders worked on a long series of circles, the speed gradually increased and five minutes before the end of the session, Jack Doohan showed the best time of the day – 1:24.318 seconds.
Friday is the last day of Formula 2 testing in Barcelona.
