The third and final day of Formula 2 testing took place in Barcelona, Spain. The best time was set by ART driver Theo Purscher, who led the morning session protocol with a result of 1:23.943 seconds.
Friday morning started for Theo with a U-turn on cold tyres. The session was interrupted by red flags, but track work soon resumed. The second time that testing was halted was after Ralph Boschung got stuck in the gravel following a crash in Turn 5.
When testing resumed, Purscher put in the best lap of the day. Theo was the only rider to get under 1 minute 24 seconds all three days of testing.
After a series of short laps, the drivers switched to driving a simulated race. There were no more red flags, so many managed to cover a long distance. The record holder was the previous day’s leader, Jack Duane – 69 laps.
In the break between the morning and afternoon sessions, it rained on the track, so after testing resumed, the drivers were in no hurry to get back to the track. Zane Maloney’s first fast lap (1:37.435 seconds) was set 45 minutes into the day session.
At the end of the first hour, Ayumu Iwasa stopped on track, resulting in red flags. Green flags appeared 1 hour and 50 minutes before the end of the session – at the same time, Jack Crawford was the first to start on slicks. The best time of the session was set an hour before the end by Roy Nissany (1:26.453 seconds).
When the riders had 45 minutes to work, it started to rain again. Most of them stopped, but eventually some drivers drove a few laps on wet tyres.
The Formula 2 season continues next week – the fifth stage of the championship will take place in Imola from May 19-21.
