Former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen summarized the results of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in the author’s column, which was won by his son Max.
“Winning is always nice, but it’s especially nice to see how Max and Red Bull have joined forces,” Jos wrote. – After two retirements at the beginning of the season, many thought that all was lost for Max. Now we see Ferrari in trouble, but in our technical sport, the situation can change in the blink of an eye. Red Bull is doing well thanks to highly qualified and experienced professionals, but it is too early to celebrate as we have a very long season ahead of us.
I think Max performed well in Baku, but let’s be honest: everything turned out fine. Ferrari did the right thing by calling Charles Leclerc into the pits during the virtual safety car, giving Leclerc the advantage. We played into the hand that he then stopped for technical reasons. Max could overtake him, but that would require him to take more risks and overtake. However, this did not come to pass.
You could see that Max is very motivated. Part of this attitude is due to the events of the last race in Monaco, but Max won’t let him hurt. On the contrary – Max only gets better when he has to fight.
The only thing that leaves a lot to be desired is the pace in qualifying. On Saturday you could see his frustration during the interview after the session, because the result was not what Max wanted. If the team solves the problem with qualifications, it will be much easier for him. This is especially true on city roads.
The good news is that Red Bull is lightning fast in the race. The car has a good balance, over a long distance the tires behave differently, so that corners can be made faster. Max does a great job with everything.
Max is very stable laps and passes them all with 100% accuracy. It was a pleasure to listen to the radio conversations between Max and his race engineer Gianpiero. Max pointed out to him not to drive too slowly or the tires would get too cold. You should always be practically at the limit of what is possible, including concentration. Gianpiero and Max have a very good relationship – they know each other very well.”
