In its short history, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has had four different winners on the Formula 1 schedule.

This trend could continue, today the fifth rider of the fifth race could win if Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen continue to fight for the championship on the streets of Baku.

Ferrari and Red Bull once again edged out their rivals in qualifying. Leclerc became the first driver to win multiple pole positions in Baku. Verstappen starts on the second row behind his Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez, who is second.

Perez looks like the only runner capable of beating Leclerc or Verstappen on Sunday. He is the current Azerbaijani champion and won the last Monaco Grand Prix.

The focus will be on Ferrari and Red Bull for most of the race, but there’s a chance we’ll see a surprise podium or top-six finisher.

Pierre Gasly placed his AlphaTauri in sixth place in the qualifying table. The Frenchman finished third behind Perez and Sebastian Vettel on one of the most unexpected podium finishes of last season.

Ferrari and Red Bull have the fastest cars on the Formula 1 grid.

Provided they avoid mechanical breakage or hit a wall in the tight bends of the Baku circuit, their cars will be ahead on Sunday. Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in qualifying to take pole position. Sergio Perez was 0.28 seconds behind him and Max Verstappen 0.34 seconds behind.

Pole position is not an automatic key for Leclerc to win this season. He has won from pole position in Bahrain and Australia, two of the first three races on the calendar, but has not won any of the last three races in which he has started first.

Red Bull has won each of these Grands Prix. Verstappen took first place in Miami and Spain, while Perez won in Monaco. On Sunday, Leclerc will also be under pressure from Perez and Verstappen. The likely winner in Baku is Leclerc, Peres or Verstappen. Carlos Sainz could take another Ferrari to Victory Lane, but this season he is often wrong. Sainz is the best candidate for the podium. This season he has a few second and two third places.

Will there be a surprise from the middle peasants?

A year ago, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix produced an unexpected combination on the podium.

Sebastian Vettel placed his Aston Martin in second place and Pierre Gasly in his AlphaTauri finished third.

The difficulty of overtaking in multiple areas of the terrain can help middle peasants achieve a much-needed high score.

Gasly is the lead candidate for the role on Sunday. In Saturday’s qualifying, he took sixth place.

Mercedes are not considered average on the grid, but at certain points in the season they have done just that. And for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, getting on the podium could help boost morale in the Mercedes camp.

His Gasley teammate Yuki Tsunoda did not finish higher than seventh this season. Tsunoda starts eighth.

Aston Martin’s Vettel and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso can count on a high result thanks to their experience. If one of the runners starts well, they can finish in the top five or higher.

McLaren are the only team other than Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes to have finished on the podium this season. Lando Norris finished third in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. At McLaren, Norris starts 11th and Daniel Ricciardo starts the race 12th. Norris was fifth from ninth in 2021 and Ricciardo won from 10th for Red Bull in 2017, so both drivers can do well from average starting positions.
