The Sepang circuit last hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017, after which the country left the national podium for financial reasons. In a recent interview with local New Straits Times, Malaysian Motorsport President Tan Sri Mohzani Mahathir said Formula 1’s return to Malaysia is only a matter of time.
Tan Sri Mohzani Mahathir: “We see no problem organizing a Formula 1 race. The question is who is going to pay for that and can we afford it. I don’t know how much the organization of the Grand Prix costs now, but it is certainly more expensive than in 2017.
Formula 1 has become increasingly popular over the years. The championship has a new audience thanks to the Netflix series, so now many countries want to host the Grand Prix.
We hear riders calling Sepang one of the toughest tracks and wanting it back on the calendar. We have a good relationship with Formula 1, we have known them since 1996, when we just started negotiations. So it’s only a matter of time before Formula 1 comes back to us.”
