During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the McLaren team was very actively discussing tactical tasks with their racers on the radio, and you could get the impression that Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo are interfering with each other. From time to time, each of them hinted that he could go faster than his partner, but the pit wall instructions boiled down to staying in your positions.
As a result, the Australian finished 8th, his partner – 9th, and in the latter part of the race the team wanted them to try to overtake Fernando Alonso, who was leading the way, but failed.
After the Grand Prix, McLaren team leader Andreas Seidl was asked: perhaps one of his divisions could be ahead of Alonso or even Sebastian Vettel, who took 6th place, if they weren’t forced to perform tactical installations?
“I’m glad we were able to score points this weekend given our real speed capabilities,” Seidl replied. – Judging by what we saw, the team and the riders have done a good job. I think we showed the maximum possible result. The machine simply couldn’t do more.
The scenario according to which the events developed was pre-designed by us, the riders knew exactly what instructions they would receive from the team in a similar situation, I trust both completely. With their actions on the track, they confirmed that they are reliable. It is very important”.
In general, the riders agree with the team management’s point of view, especially according to Riccardo, there was no real chance to get ahead of Alonso yet.
“At some points we could go a little faster than him, but in the third sector the Alpine car was so fast that even when I came out of the last corner, resting on Fernando’s gearbox, it immediately pulled away from me in a straight line,” says Daniel. – I saw that Lando was right behind him for the first part of the distance, but he couldn’t overtake either.
Of course you always want to be a little faster, but I think we showed the best possible result. Obviously we had some sort of games that had to do with team tactics, but in my opinion the situation neutralized itself. It is unlikely that we could have attacked Fernando if we had acted differently.”
