The Korean company Hyundai is preparing to create a sports prototype of the Hypercar class to make its debut in the world endurance racing championship in the medium term.
According to the French edition of Auto Hebdo, Cyril Abiteboul, now head of sports programs at Hyundai, invited François-Xavier Demaison, the former technical director of Williams, to take charge of the preparation of this project.
The factory Hyundai team is currently doing quite well in the WRC championship and i20 N Rally drivers Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo have been on the podium more than once this year. There has been talk of the Korean company’s interest in other categories of motorsport for some time now, but no real progress has been made so far, just as no official statements have been made.
However, in April we quoted the words of Abiteboul, who made it clear that Hyundai intends to “keep an eye on the championships, in which the electric component will be key”.
Factory teams Toyota, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche and Cadillac currently compete in the hypercar class at the WEC, with BMW, Lamborghini and Alpine set to join in 2024.
