After qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Alex Elbon was not happy with Fernando Alonso’s performance: during the last attempt in the first session, the Alpine rider went off the track at Turn 15, triggering yellow flags, allowing Elbon to not improve his time and go to the second part.
Alonso disagreed with the criticism of him, and 1996 World Champion Damon Hill praised Fernando for his creative approach to on-track fighting.
“I love Fernando – he’s a cunning and smart guy,” Damon shared his thoughts on the F1 Nation podcast. – Alex Albon called him incredibly smart, because Fernando was at his best in qualifying.
There is no doubt that Alonso has returned to his old tricks. Although we don’t openly admit it, we admire his approach and how he manages to turn the situation in his favor, with a cheeky smile on his face.
And his approach works, benefiting both himself and Alpine. I’d rather be on the same team as Fernando than be his opponent against whom he uses his techniques.”
