Riders comment on the cancellation of the race in Imola

The sixth round of the Formula 1 season was due to start in Imola on Friday. Many teams prepared technical innovations and expected to evaluate them on the Italian circuit, but today the Grand Prix was canceled due to severe flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region.

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes: “I hope everyone in Emilia Romagna is safe and looking out for each other. My thoughts are with those who have suffered from this tragedy and with the rescue and emergency services now at work on the scene.

We all understand that safety comes first. I can’t wait to see everyone at the next race.”

George Russell, Mercedes: “I am sorry to the fans that the race has been canceled this weekend, but the safety of all involved must always come first. I wish everyone in Emilia-Romagna and the surrounding areas affected by the floods all the best.”

Lando Norris, McLaren: “I love racing, but safety is more important. I’m sorry to all fans, but we will be back in Imola. Take care of yourself”.

Oscar Pistri, McLaren: “My thoughts are with those affected by the floods in Emilia Romagna. I’m sorry to the fans that we can’t take part, but I’m still looking forward to my first race in Imola in the future. Take care of yourself!”

Nico Hulkenberg, Haas: “Unfortunately the Imola race weekend had to be cancelled, but there are more important things to do now. I really hope that everyone living in Emilia-Romagna will be safe in the coming days.”

Esteban Ocon, Alpine: “My thoughts are with all the people in the Emilia-Romagna region affected by heavy rainfall and flooding. I am disappointed that I will not be performing for the incredible Italian fans this weekend, but the absolute priority is the safety of people and the emergency services, who courageously help those in need.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing: “The team and I support the decision to cancel the Grand Prix taken by Formula 1 and the local authorities. Our thoughts are with those affected by heavy rains and flooding in Emilia-Romagna. We wish you strength and stay as safe as possible in these days.”
