During the race weekend in Baku, one of the topics of discussion was the build-up of cars on the straights and the need to change the technical regulations to eliminate this phenomenon. Above all, the changes were discussed at Mercedes, on whose cars the build-up on the city circuit was especially pronounced. However, former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle believes that Mercedes should solve this problem itself, and not ask for changes to the regulations.
Martin Brandl: “Mercedes is very active in discussing this topic because they want changes in the regulations. Racers are not against some changes either, but the problem is especially acute at Mercedes. At the same time, everything is fine with the machines of other teams – they do not swing at all.
On some machines, the build up appears minor depending on the route. However, the fact that the teams were able to eliminate it suggests that this is a Mercedes problem, not Formula 1.
I’m probably not the type of person to expect sympathy on this matter, as cars were monstrous to drive in my day. There is no doubt that the build-up adds inconvenience, but Mercedes can easily eliminate it by simply increasing ground clearance, but then they will lose speed.
It’s actually astonishing that Mercedes can’t handle the problem. Apparently they have a fast car and just need to unleash its potential.”
