Steiner: Spectators don’t just come to the track to race

In recent years, the popularity of Formula 1 in the United States has been growing steadily. This is partly due to the release of the documentary series Drive to Survive and the emergence of new stages in the country. Haas team principal Günther Steiner attributes the popularity of Formula 1 to the amount of entertainment for fans on the track.

“There’s a lot more fun on the track than before,” said Günter Steiner. – Previously there were only races on the autodromes – one race passed, then the second, and nothing in the break. We raced for motorsport fans.

Formula 1 was not very successful in the US until the purchase of Liberty Media. After moving to the US, I started to understand the country better. The people here want constant entertainment, not just sit there for three hours waiting for the next time the cars drive. They want to do something.

Concerts are held on the tracks in the US, entertainment venues are equipped. When you come to the track with kids you want to entertain them and not just sit in the stands or on the mound. Try explaining to a 12-year-old child that you have to wait two hours until the next time the cars leave. He won’t understand.

In 2023, people don’t just want to watch races, they also need other entertainment. I think Formula 1 has done a great job over the last five years to ensure that spectators don’t just come to the track for the race, but at the same time the Formula 1 race remains the central event of the weekend.
