On June 10, Jenson Button will start the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the second time in his career and gained his first experience competing in the legendary marathon in 2018 when he raced for the Russian SMP Racing team.
His partners then were Vitaly Petrov and Mikhail Alyoshin, they drove a sports prototype BR1 of the LMP1 class, but did not reach the finish line.
Now Jenson is involved in a new and somewhat unusual project, which we already talked about: it is called Garage 56, it is implemented by the American team Hendrick Motorsports with the support of Chevrolet and Goodyear. Along with Jimmie Johnson and Mike Rockenfeller, Button will race out of competition at Le Mans in a Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1, a NASCAR car built specifically for the 24-hour marathon.
Their crew number 24 will compete in the so-called “Innovative” class, and this is a very interesting venture.
“Only a few more weeks until the day when, together with Jimmy and Mike, we test the power of our monster in the corners of the Sarte circuit during the 24 hours of Le Mans, which is being held for the hundredth time this year! – with such a comment, Jenson accompanied a photo of the car and shared it on social networks. “Hold on to your beer cans and barbecue plates, because you’ll feel our approach before you see it!”
Anyone who has been to Le Mans knows what the 2009 world champion is talking about. He exaggerated a bit, of course, but if you’re close enough to the track, you just physically feel the vibrations of the atmosphere when a mighty sports prototype or even a sports car flies by at full speed.
The organizers of the marathon report that all tickets for the anniversary race have been sold, although the possibility to view the training, which starts on June 4, remains.
