Furbatto: It’s simply impossible to make a copy of the machine

Luca Furbatto is the second season as chief engineer of Aston Martin F1, where he moved from Alfa Romeo, he is one of the authors of the transformations that are now taking place in the Silverstone team, and thanks to which it has made such impressive progress.

“When I signed a contract with this team, I was attracted by the prospects that opened up for Aston Martin, related to the development of the team and the desire to win,” said Spain’s Marca Furbatto. “After all, it is necessary not only to deal with the machine, but also to see the limitations of the existing infrastructure, plans to improve it, because our goal is to win the World Cup.”

Furbatto disagrees if the AMR-23 is called a copy of a Red Bull car, although Aston Martin technical director Dan Fallows used to work in a team from Milton Keynes: “In fact, it is simply impossible to get a … make a copy of the car, because there are fundamental differences in architecture between these two chassis A: We use Mercedes powertrain, gearbox and rear suspension.

To be fair, Dan Fellowes and Eric Blandin (the former at Red Bull Racing and the latter at Mercedes) brought their own approach to aerodynamics development, and this was probably an important step in terms of increasing the speed of the car . But if we recall the last season, then in the second half of the year we have already achieved significant changes for the better.

In 2022, for the sixth stage of the season, we changed the aerodynamic concept of the chassis, but we started production of the first parts already in February, and this was before Red Bull introduced its car. We realized that we had gone in the wrong direction in terms of aerodynamics, but in addition to improvements in this area, we made a number of improvements to the chassis throughout the season.

This made the car better and better and in the second half of the year we were probably fifth fastest and steadily earning points. Now the team is even more confident, in five races we climbed the podium four times and took second place, second only to Red Bull. We all want to succeed, we all have a fighting spirit and we want our team to constantly move forward.”
