At the start of the season, Toto Wolff was ready to admit that he would allow a scenario where Lewis Hamilton would negotiate with other teams if Mercedes could not provide him with a fast car to compete for race wins.
In March he literally said the following: “If we can’t provide him for the next two years, Lewis will look for options to continue his career elsewhere. I don’t think he is looking for a contract with another team at the moment…
Since recently in the press there were frequent rumors about the negotiations of the seven-time world champion and Ferrari, the head of the Mercedes team once again assured that all this was not true.
“Such rumors appear every two years, when we have to sign a new contract. But there is not a word of truth in it, Wolff said in an interview with the Austrian newspaper OE24. – We are talking to him in a normal way and time is not running out for us.
Just discussing money matters is uncomfortable when it has to be done by two friends who treat each other like brothers and have overcome so much together in ten years. But I am firmly convinced that we will find a solution, I have no doubt about that.”
During the interview, Wolff was reminded of Hamilton’s words that he will race longer than anyone thinks. But the question is: what did he mean by this, only cooperation with Mercedes?
“I can’t imagine any other options,” Brackley’s team leader said. “If we can provide Lewis with a competitive car, he will be able to win races for a long time…”
