Stefan Wilson suffered a spinal cord injury during practice in Indianapolis yesterday and will not be able to start the Indy 500 race on Sunday.
In the car of the British racer of the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team, at full speed before the first corner of the oval circuit, his compatriot Katherine Legg, who competes for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, crashed from behind. She made an obvious mistake, did not have time to slow down, and there was a rather serious accident.
Wilson’s car crashed into the barrier, hit it with the rear and even flew into the air. Of course she was badly beaten, but Stefan was conscious when the rescue team helped him get out of the cockpit. Then the rider was taken to Indianapolis University Hospital.
When the results of the initial investigation were announced, the team issued a brief statement: “Given the nature of the injury, Wilson will not be allowed to compete in Sunday’s race.”
Stefan is still in the hospital, where further investigations will take place. He is the younger brother of Justin Wilson, a former Formula 1, ChampCar and IndyCar driver who was fatally injured in a crash at the Pocono Oval in August 2015.
33-year-old Stefan Wilson posted a 25th qualifying time and would compete in the Indy 500 for the fifth time in his career.
