George Russell: It’s not about balance, the problem is more serious

Mercedes drivers gave quite a bit for pole position, explaining this by the fact that the car was not fast enough on the straights, where the longitudinal build-up is very much evident.

George Russell (5th): “Feelings are ambiguous. In general, everything is not bad, the car performed well, although of course you feel a jolt when you cross the finish line and see that you have lost more than a second on pole time.

We are working hard, we are trying to increase the speed, but this weekend our weaknesses showed again. Frankly, we just weren’t fast enough. And while the car behaves well, every bump in the cockpit is felt stronger than ever. On the straights it was so shaky that I could barely see anything in the braking zones, although the W13 can handle the corners well.

We know it’s not about balance, the problem is more serious and it’s because the car doesn’t have enough downforce. We try to increase it, but this directly affects the balance. At the same time, we know that the W13 has potential, but we are not able to develop it, so 5th position is our maximum, also in the race.”

Lewis Hamilton (7th): “It doesn’t surprise me that we lose so much to the leaders, because the same thing happened in Monaco. Tomorrow’s race promises to be challenging and chaotic at the same time, so a lot can happen.

Qualifying was not easy, but we are still in the top ten. Unfortunately, the range of effective settings for this machine is very narrow and no matter what we try, it doesn’t give the desired results. We try to make several changes to the settings, but the image does not change and the car’s build reappears, causing us to lose speed.

Only when we lower the ground clearance do we drive more or less fast. We are forced to reduce clearance as much as possible, but at the same time we have to endure unpleasant sensations, because both the back and neck suffer from this tremor. I think our W13 is more prone to build up than other cars. And on the straights we’re going really slow, because of this we might have problems in the race, but we’ll try to do our best. However, it is possible that our pace will not be so bad tomorrow.”
