Honda’s return to Formula 1 in 2026 as powertrain supplier to Aston Martin was announced today. It is possible Fernando Alonso will still be playing for the British team by then, who once had rampant criticism of Honda engines when they ran McLaren cars.
At a press conference dedicated to the partnership with Aston Martin, Honda Racing Corporation President Koiji Watanabe said he would not influence the choice of drivers and would not mind working with Alonso again.
“The choice of the composition of the drivers depends entirely on the team and not on the supplier of the power plants – this is not our responsibility,” Racefans quoted Watanabe as saying. – That is why we leave the choice of the riders to the team.
Alonso’s comments helped us improve the engine and win the title with Red Bull. I consider Fernando to be an excellent pilot. If Alonso becomes our driver again, we will have no objection to him driving the car.”
