In 2023, Fernando Alonso took the podium in four races, finishing third in all cases. At the FIA press conference, the Aston Martin driver vowed to attack this weekend as he believes he hardly has any chance of winning this season in Monaco.
Fernando Alonso: “If I tell you that I came to Monaco without thinking about winning the race, I will lie to you because this is our only chance.
We know that Monaco and Singapore are specific circuits where you need to gradually increase your confidence in training and fly closer to the walls. I intend to attack harder than any other weekend.
The Red Bull car is better than all the others – they did a great job and deserved to dominate. However, we know that there are several weekends throughout the season, like in Monaco, where we think about fighting for the win.
Maybe we’re having the worst weekend and not earning any points – you can’t be sure of anything on such a specific track. But we will certainly try to make the most of the one-off opportunities.
We have already seen the gearbox fail in the second part of qualifying in Saudi Arabia in Max Verstappen’s car, and in Australia there were problems with Sergio Perez’s car during practice and qualifying. If something like that happens on Sunday, we will automatically close the gap considerably.”
