Following a contract extension with Sergio Pérez, Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has said he wants to keep Pierre Gasly at AlphaTauri for 2023. The Austrian specialist believes Gasly will not find the best option to continue his career, but former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert believes Pierre should look at alternative options.
Johnny Herbert: “I think Pierre should do the same as Daniel Riccardo in his time – leave. The fact is, however, that there are fewer and fewer options for him. He should start offering his services so that when the opportunity arises, he is free of his contract with AlphaTauri or Red Bull and they let him go.
I think Pierre needs this, because the rider doesn’t want to be stuck in a team like AlphaTauri until the end of his career. He should already be looking for options now so that when the opportunity arises, he will immediately reply to the new team: “Yes, I’m ready to join you.”
Sometimes riders have to make tough decisions, if you can call them that. However, from a career perspective, this would be the right move for Pierre. I don’t want Red Bull to stop him from thriving with another team.”
