Pirelli waits for one pit stop if it doesn’t rain

On the track, where overtaking is almost impossible, one pit stop is the fastest strategy, and sometimes it’s the only chance to fight for position.

If the race is run on a dry track, Pirelli considers the optimal strategy of one pit stop – after a start on Medium about 20-25 laps, go to Hard, or after a start on Soft about 15-20 laps. The reverse is also possible.

Mario Isola, Pirelli: “Today in Monaco we witnessed one of the most spectacular and unpredictable qualifying sessions in recent Formula 1 history, with a fight from the first to the last minute. It was already clear yesterday that the gaps would be minimal, which was confirmed – in the first part of qualifying the top 15 riders shared 0.652 seconds, in the second the gap between first and 10th place was 0.469 seconds, and in the final fit the top four in 0.188 seconds.

We confirmed the versatility of the soft tyres, allowing us to do several fast laps with a break in between. Track conditions changed over the course of the day, adding even more intrigue. Normally qualifying is the most interesting part of this weekend, but we’re looking forward to seeing what happens tomorrow.”
