Haas is disappointed with the result of qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, in which Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg recorded the seventeenth and eighteenth fastest times. For the second time in the season after the stage in Baku, both riders of the US team stopped fighting in the first session.
Kevin Magnussen (17th): “All week we thought we could do better. In the first part of qualifying we decided to do two fast laps on the second set of tyres, while everyone else was on three and improved their results significantly.
The team did a great job getting the car ready after the problems in third practice. The guys always got the job done, so I had no doubts that I would participate in qualifying. Moreover, I thought I could compete for the final, but I was wrong. Let’s see what happens tomorrow – maybe the weather will come into play and we’ll have a nice race.”
Nico Hulkenberg (18th): “We are disappointed with the results of qualifying because we know very well how important the starting position is in Monaco. After the red flags we had the option to do three laps or, as planned, two – we chose the second option, thinking that would be enough. In our case, however, the rubber only worked well on the first lap.
I thought we could go faster and get into the second part, but in the end we just didn’t have enough pace.”
Gunter Steiner, team leader: “It is not from such positions that I want to start in Monaco, so we need to understand why we finished where we finished. We have to deal with the situation and try to find the best option for tomorrow in case something happens on track. You can’t give up – there are always opportunities, especially when chaos sets in.
