Gabriele Mini’s first career victory ended Sunday’s Formula 3 race in Monaco. Together with the Italian driver Hitech GP, Prema drivers Dino Beganovich and Paul Aron climbed the podium.
Leonardo Fornaroli, who was due to start 10th, was unable to start the warm-up lap, the marshals rolled his car away and the Trident driver started from the pit lane.
At the start, pole winner Mini stayed ahead, while championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto lost position and dropped back to eighth.
On the first lap at turn twelfth, due to a struggle with Oliver Gray, Ido Cohen crashed the car and collided with the right side of the car against the barrier. For him, the race was over and the safety car drove onto the track.
The restart was given on the fifth lap of twenty-seven and went smoothly – the riders kept their position. Mini immediately showed the best lap and tried to make a gap with the peloton. Dino Beganović, who was riding in second place, tried to hold on to the lead, but the Prema rider gradually fell behind.
On lap 12, the stewards gave a 10-second penalty to Taylor Barnard, who was seventh at the time. The reason is cutting the first corner at the start of the race and gaining an advantage as a result.
On the eighteenth lap, Sebastian Montoya made an attempt to overtake Chao Collet on the rise after the first corner. Sebastian hit the left rear wheel of Collet’s car, broke his front wing and went to the pits to be replaced.
For Chao, everything turned out to be even worse – the Brazilian got a puncture and stopped in the “pocket” at the fifth corner. For Collet, the race was over. The stewards gave Montoya a ten-second penalty, but Sebastian was already in last position by then and lost the circle to the leader.
With three laps to go, Beganovich reduced the lead of the leading Mini to seven-tenths, but failed to attack.
Gabriele Mini took the race to his first Formula 3 victory, moving up to second in the drivers’ standings. Dino Beganović finished second for his second podium finish of the season. Paul Aron’s third-place finish was a repeat of his career best result.
Gabriel Bortoleto finished sixth, but moved up to fifth thanks to a penalty from Barnard. After the stage in Monaco, Bortoleto has a lead of 17 points over Mini in the individual classification. Barnard himself moved up to eighth place. Saturday’s sprint winner José-Maria Marti finished ninth. Nikita Bedrin finished the race in Monaco in twelfth place.
