The Monaco Grand Prix results were not what Ferrari racers had hoped for. Charles Leclerc finished in the same position from which he started: sixth. Carlos Sainz battled Esteban Ocon for third in the race, but a failed strategy meant he couldn’t get ahead of him due to a pit stop, and closer to the finish he made a mistake on a wet track to finish eighth.
Charles Leclerc (6th): “Why did we pit late to get intermediate tyres? I think this is the most common question I’ll get today. We’ve made strategic miscalculations in the past, but I don’t think we made a mistake today.
In such conditions, there was a good chance that a safety car would enter the track, given that many were on slicks in the rain. That’s why we stayed on track until the last one hoping for a safety car, but it never left. Now we understand that it was better to stop earlier. But if someone made a mistake, our solution would work.
Our car is very difficult to drive in traffic. The pace is better than we showed today, but I don’t think I could have done better.
In Barcelona we will have some new products and I hope they will take a step in the right direction. Of course we don’t expect miracles, but I hope the updates are enough to at least have a good qualification.
Carlo Sainz (8th): “As usual in Monaco, the adrenaline rushed through your body – you could hear it on the radio. The first pit stop surprised me as I was very fast on the Hard tires and thought it would allow me to extend the distance and overtake Esteban. However, we made a pit stop, after which I came back on track one second behind. I wasn’t ready to accept this, so I’ll talk to the team.
As for the second pit stop, we spent it one lap later, but this is probably more my fault. I tried to process the disappointment of the first pit stop and tried to do something, but I was wrong.
Collision with Esteban? He braked in the middle of the track and I had no space left or right. I’m glad nothing serious happened, but it shows there’s no room for two cars on this track – it’s too narrow for modern technology.
