In Monaco, Aston Martin achieved their best result of the season – Fernando Alonso finished second, but Lance Stroll retired from the race after an accident on a wet track.
Mike Crackteam boss: “Front row start and Fernando’s second place in Monaco is a great result for the team and an important indicator of our progress.
The match was difficult. At the start we put Fernando on Hard tires hoping to be ahead of Max at the end of the race because of the strategy, but it started to rain! It wasn’t too strong at the start – and we put Alonso Medium, because the worn Hard is incredibly hard to fight on a wet track, but the rain immediately picked up – and the switch to intermediate rubber on the next lap was a totally logical decision. This didn’t affect the result, we still hadn’t caught up with Max.
Lance drove a damaged car after a few contacts on the first lap, but he fought hard and gained back a number of positions. Unfortunately on a wet track he made a mistake under braking and lost his front wing after colliding with a barrier. Now we go to Spain, where we want to earn points with two cars.”
Fernando Alonso (2nd): “I am very satisfied with the result. The race was not easy and the rain made it even more difficult. I don’t think an extra pit stop with the transition first to Medium and then to intermediate rubber has influenced the result. It is difficult to judge the course of the race from the cockpit, but on the lap where I stopped, the track was completely dry, with the exception of Turns 7 and 8 – there was no point in fitting intermediate tires, besides there were was a comfortable pause behind me. But after a minute and a half the situation changed and I had to go back to the pits.
Today I had no chance to win – neither on the wet nor on the dry track, although we acted aggressively and tried to win. We had hoped that Max’s Medium tires would lose efficiency quickly, but he put in a great pace for 50 laps. But we’re getting closer! Spain ahead!
Lance walk (retirement): “Honestly, I don’t remember this race in any way. The first circle was very eventful – several collisions, debris flew from all sides. In these incidents, my car received quite serious damage, but I continued to fight with rivals, overtook several cars – it was fun!
Problems started with the brakes even before the rain and when the track got wet I just couldn’t stop the car. I think I hit the barrier at least five times. It wasn’t my day.
Congratulations to Fernando on a great result. I will try to earn points in Barcelona. I’m already looking forward to Spain.”
