After a failed qualifying session in Haas F1, they tried a risky strategy to pay for themselves, but it failed…
Gunter Steiner, Team boss: “We did our best to earn points. There’s no point in finishing twelfth, thirteenth or fourteenth, so in the end we decided to take a chance – you never know what could happen, but it didn’t work.
The race was lost yesterday in qualifying, we knew that if nothing extraordinary happens we cannot earn any points. Today we got a penalty for a first lap incident, but we don’t know why. It looks like FIA inconsistency is becoming the norm.”
Kevin Magnussen (19e): “We tried everything, tried to do everything the other way around, but nothing came of it. When it started to rain I stayed on track hoping for a safety car or a red flag, but it didn’t happen.
In the end I finished last. We put on heavy rain tires, couldn’t get them to work, and when it did, the race was over.
When you’re fighting outside the top ten it makes sense to take risks – that’s what we did today, but nothing came of it. It’s good to have another race next week.”
Nico Hulkenberg (17th): “Not the best weekend, but the race turned out to be fun due to the fact that the conditions were constantly changing. I’m glad I got through these changes and rode pretty well.
On a clear track, the car allowed me to go at a good pace, but I spent most of the race in traffic – this is common in Monaco. I hope we will be more competitive in Barcelona.”
