Monaco Grand Prix: Curious Statistics

Some interesting statistical compilations of the Monaco Grand Prix results…

Qualification

After qualifying in Monaco, Verstappen took his first pole position in the Principality, his third of the season and 23rd of his career. Max stayed ahead of Fernando Alonso to career pole positions. Of the current drivers in this indicator, he is now second only to Lewis Hamilton (103 poles).

Fernando Alonso qualified second, just 0.084 seconds behind Max, the biggest difference between pole position and second place of the season. For the sixth time in six Grand Prix, the Spaniard was faster than his teammate.

Charles Leclerc qualified third for the second time this season, the fourth time this year ahead of a teammate.

Esteban Ocon qualified fourth, the best result of his Renault/Alpine career. But his best result is third place behind the wheel of Force India in Belgium’18. Ocon lost from pole by just 0.188 seconds.

Carlos Sainz qualified fifth after starting fourth or fifth in five of the six races this season.

Yuki Tsunoda showed the ninth fastest time, reaching the qualifying final in Monaco for the first time in his career.

The 12th place is Nick de Vries’ best result this year.

Alex Albon qualified 13th, the best result for the Williams in Monaco since Sergey Sirotkin’s 13th in 2018.

Race

After winning the Monaco Grand Prix for the second time in his career, Max Verstappen took his fourth win of the season and 39th of his career, ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the number of wins for Red Bull (38).

During the course of the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen surpassed the milestone of 2000 career leading laps (now 2077 laps). Of the current drivers, only Hamilton is ahead of him (5447 laps in the lead).

In terms of the number of laps in the lead (5672), Red Bull was ahead of Lotus (5624) and rose to fifth place in this indicator.

Fernando Alonso finished second, repeating his best result since Hungary’14, where he also finished second. This is the 103rd podium in the career of the Spaniard, according to this indicator, he overtook Kimi Raikkonen in fifth place in the overall standings.

Esteban Ocon finished third and climbed to the podium for the third time in his career. Ocon became the first Frenchman to podium in Monaco since Olivier Panis won the principality in 1996.

Lewis Hamilton’s fourth place is his best result in Monaco this decade.

For the first time of the season and the 62nd time in his career, Hamilton kept the best lap of the race. This is Hamilton’s 50th best lap with Mercedes.

George Russell finished fifth, giving Mercedes their best result of the season – 23 points per stage.

Pierre Gasly’s seventh place is his best result of the season.

Carlos Sainz’s eighth-place finish is his worst finish in Monaco since 2018.

Nick de Vries’ twelfth place is his best result of the season.
