Fernando Alonso finished second in Monaco, his best result of the season. In an interview ahead of the awards ceremony, the Aston Martin driver admitted he had no chance today to impose a battle for victory on Max Verstappen.
Fernando Alonso «The race turned out to be difficult. I started on hard tyres, so I gave up the chance to compete in the first corner. We were hoping to play with strategy, but Max drove brilliantly on Medium tires and was able to complete the long first stint. I didn’t stand a chance and closer to the finish the rain made it more difficult – it wasn’t easy to stay on track.
The rain prevented me from going full throttle and I had to be as careful as possible when braking in Turns 5 and 10. It’s not easy to fly in such conditions and I’m surprised there were no incidents and the safety car didn’t leave the runway. Everyone did a great job today and kept the cars on track.”
