Five of Sergio Perez’s six Formula 1 victories have been on urban circuits. Before the race weekend in Monaco, journalists asked the Red Bull Racing driver what was the secret of his successful performances on the city stages.
“I’ve always loved tracks like these, they’re always interesting,” said Sergio Pérez in response to Racingnews365. – On such tracks it is important to be fast in the race and to handle the pressure.
The rider has no right to make a mistake. If you make a small mistake on a stationary track you can get away with it, but on city roads you can’t avoid paying for mistakes. Maybe on the day of the race I feel more confident than the rest.
In Baku I won because of the net advantage in pace, so it doesn’t matter if it’s a city circuit or a stationary one. If I could win in Baku, I could win anywhere.
The reason I’m fast on city roads is because I get to play with the car more than usual. Every weekend we have a challenge and it’s hard to say if the track suits us or not, so it’s important to understand the characteristics of the car. I think I know our car well, so we can be fast on all tracks.”
