Commenting on the signing of a contract with Aston Martin to supply power plants in 2026, Honda Racing Corporation President Koiji Watanabe said he would not mind working with Fernando Alonso.
In turn, Monaco team principal Mike Krak said he sees no reason that could prevent Alonso from continuing to play for the team after three years.
Mike Krak: “I think there is no reason why Fernando cannot drive our car in 2026. I mean, I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t want to be with us.”
In addition, Krak explained why the team decided to give up cooperation with Mercedes in favor of Honda: “In 2026, not only the regulations for power plants will change, but also the chassis. The working groups have been working on the regulations since February last year, which indicates how closely the rules will be interrelated. As a result, teams will need the maximum integration of the powerplant and chassis to build a fast car.
When a de facto factory cooperation agreement is made between the team and the power plant supplier, the relationship between the parties is more open. This will allow much earlier information about the characteristics of the installation and, accordingly, adjust the aerodynamic configuration and set the appropriate tasks. Such close cooperation with the power plant supplier will be of great benefit in light of the new regulations.”
