Rob Marshall becomes McLaren technical director

Rob Marshall, formerly chief designer at Red Bull Racing, will take over as McLaren’s new technical director on January 1 next year, the team from Woking announced today.

He will join the technical leadership team, alongside Peter Prodrom and David Sanchez, reporting directly to Andrea Stella, team leader.

He will be supported by Neil Houldy, who has been entrusted with the duties of deputy technical director – a new position in the structure of McLaren’s engineering department.

Rob joins McLaren after 17 years with Red Bull Racing and his appointment will be one of the most important steps the team takes in their quest to top the championship.

Andrew Stella, Team Principal: “I am incredibly excited that Rob is joining McLaren. He has over 25 years of motorsport experience and will share with us his vast experience and knowledge gained during his impressive career at Red Bull Racing.

His appointment will be one of the most important and natural steps in the team’s desire to return to the leadership position. Our team intends to fight for championship victories, but in previous seasons we have not shown stable progress and achieved competitive growth.

In recent months we have made efforts to change the current situation. We are taking a holistic approach, based on strengthening our team and continuing our technology and infrastructure improvement program, which will also be implemented shortly.

McLaren’s people and tradition are our most important resource. We are busy developing and promoting our own talents, but at the same time we strengthen the team by inviting new specialists. We now have a first-class professional like Rob in our ranks, helping us achieve the highest technical standards in developing machines that can win.”
