Canadian Grand Prix: Comments before the stage

Pirelli

Mario Isola: “In Canada, the teams will have to solve several problems related to the fact that the weather is usually changeable, the telemetry collected three years ago is already outdated and we will have completely new tires with different compositions and designs to bring to market. track, which is hardly used during the year. All of these factors will lead to a rapid increase in speed over the course of the weekend.

Compared to our last visit to Montreal, riders get more stable compounds with a wider working range, allowing them to attack more actively in each section without fear of overheating.

One of the interesting features of the Montreal circuit is that the time loss in the pit lane is one of the lowest in the season – from the pit lane arrival to the exit takes less than twenty seconds. This opens up additional strategy opportunities for teams.”

Max Verstappen: “We haven’t been to Montreal in a long time, I’m happy to return to this unique track. It is interesting to see the condition of the asphalt there. I hope the car does well this weekend.

I always look forward to this Grand Prix. Montreal is a very beautiful city, last week we had a double win in Baku, it would be great to leave Canada with the same result. It’s nice to be in the lead in the individual standings and in the constructors’ championship, but the end of the season is still a long way off. We have to keep working and earn as many points as possible.”

Sergio Perez: “We are going to Canada at a great moment for the team. In Baku we had a great result and deserved a winning double. I was a little disappointed with the result, but if you’re disappointed that you finished second with the best lap of the race, that’s okay!

Our car is fast on street circuits, we are confident that we can perform well this weekend and maintain a positive trend. Together with the engineers I will analyze the race in Baku carefully to get the most out of this weekend.

I’m happy to be back in Canada, I love this track, it’s great to have a really competitive car this time around. I’m sure it will be fun!”

Lando Norris: “I’m glad we’re coming back to Canada. This will be my second race in Montreal and it will be great to be in front of the Canadian fans again. Of course in 2019 not everything ended the way I wanted for me, so I want to return to this track as soon as possible to give it my all.

I’ve been working on the simulator in preparation for the Canadian Grand Prix and I’m ready to fight behind the wheel of our new car.

There were difficulties in Baku because of the high winds, but it is important that my partner and I earned points for the team. In order to count on better results, we have to make extra efforts, but I am sure that we will succeed. McLaren has great people, both on the track and on the team, and they work tirelessly to take us forward.

Let’s look ahead and I hope we can get some points again this weekend!”

Daniel Riccardo: “It seems like all my favorite races start with the letter M – Melbourne, Monaco, Monza and of course Montreal. After a two year break, I am looking forward to returning to Canada. Montreal is a great city, there’s always a great atmosphere and I want to jump into it as soon as possible.

It will help us get ready for the attack, because the Canadian Grand Prix is always fun, and it was there in 2014 that I got my first win.

After some difficult races it was great to earn points again in Baku. It wasn’t easy there either, but the hard work and determination paid off and I’m going to use that momentum in the second of two straight races so I’m in a fighting mood.”

Andreas Seidli, team leader: “After a two-year break, we are returning to Canada. Many riders consider this track to be one of their favorites, and it will be great to see the Canadian fans again, because in 2019 we felt their incredible support.

It will be interesting to see how our cars perform on this fast track with its many chicanes and the infamous Wall of Champions. There are good overtaking opportunities and I hope we have an exciting race ahead. It’s important for the team to stay focused as we prepare for the Canadian Grand Prix, so let’s keep pushing!”

Frederic Vasseur, team leader: “The team had a difficult weekend in Baku, but it is in such conditions that it shows real character. No one in the pits or on base gave up – we saw an immediate response to make up for the disappointment.

The team is going to Canada with the determination to prove that last week’s result was an exception – I’m sure we can do it. There were a lot of positives in our work – in the race Guanyu Zhou showed a brilliant pace and we know he would have earned points if he had finished. We will try to have a problem free next weekend and are determined to get back to the track immediately. †

Valtteri Bottas: “It’s great to be back in Canada after a long vacation. Formula 1 is really supported in Montreal and it’s always a pleasure for us to come and see the support from the fans.

Last week we had a difficult race. After Baku, the team spent several days in detailed analysis to understand what had gone wrong. We have taken the necessary steps to start the new weekend with a clean slate and return to the level of competition that we have shown since the start of the season.

We know the circuit in Montreal well, although we are waiting for the first race on the new generation machines. In the first training session, the team immediately gets to work.”

Guanyu Zhou: “The advantage of the double stages is that after a disappointing stage you can immediately go back on track – this is the approach I will follow next weekend. I focused on Baku’s positive results: my speed in the first part of qualifying and race pace until I retire. All this will be the starting point for getting started in Canada.

The team has been working hard to solve the problems in Baku. We went to Montreal with the aim of getting the result that eluded us last week.

I’ve never raced in Canada so I don’t know the track, but it’s a great track that I’ve seen on TV many times. It’s a real classic and I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel on Friday.”

Pierre Gasly: “I flew home with Max from Baku. He won the race, so the flight was great! I was also happy with our weekend. I started sixth and finished the race fifth. We did everything right, implemented a successful strategy, had great pit stops and I had a good start and was fast on track. I’m happy for the team because in the past races we haven’t had any luck. It wasn’t easy, but we stayed together and kept working.

In Canada there is another street circuit waiting for us and I think the race in Montreal this year will be particularly difficult. This year’s cars have a much stiffer suspension than the previous ones, high curbs and fast sections will be a real test for them, as well as the final corner and the famous Wall of Champions! We will have to avoid the curbs, although we attacked them before to show good lap times.

It will be much more difficult to get the best out of the car, but we will do our best to prepare well for this stage and on the track to get the results that our car is capable of, as we did in Baku.”

Yuuki Tsunoda: “In Baku I was very upset that I didn’t earn points, but the good form of the team makes us optimistic in Canada. We had the best qualifying of the season and in the race I could have finished sixth had it not been for the rear wing problem. I would like to continue this progress.

After Monaco and Baku, we are waiting in Montreal for another unusual track, with little grip and fast corners. As in Baku, we use the medium-low downforce settings to get good speed in a straight line. I’ve only worked with the Canadian track in a simulator, but I’ve used it many times in a Formula 1 game, so I had a good idea of what to expect before driving it in a simulator. Let’s see how it feels after the first workout.

I’ve never been to Canada, I’ve been told Montreal is an interesting city, so I’m looking forward to my first visit.”

Aston Martin

Lance Walk: “Of course I’m very happy to be with my fans again and to be racing in Canada again! It’s a shame we haven’t been to Montreal in recent years, so there’s a lot of work to do now to get the car ready for the first sessions.

The team has made a lot of progress last season, so I hope we can do well on my home track.”

Sebastian Vettel: “It’s nice to be back on a track we haven’t ridden in a few years, but this break will make it harder to find a rhythm. It’s well worth it though, as the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a fantastic track and a great place to race.

The team has learned a lot from the previous stages, so the car gets better every weekend. I wonder what result in Montreal the work done will bring.
