In citing McLaren’s failure in Formula 1, many believe McLaren Group head Zach Brown took on too much by fielding teams in Indycar, Formula E and Extreme E.
In an interview with RacingNews365, Zach disagreed with this sentiment. He believes McLaren has the lead in Formula 1 in terms of the number of sponsors because it is present in different markets and in different industries…
Zach Brown: “A big team is always stronger. I want us to be the best team commercially, with the best commercial offer for sponsors.
Formula 1 is the center of our world, always has been and always will be. But we have a team at IndyCar to be present in North America — that’s what our fans and our sponsors want, it’s good for our auto business.
We have a team in Formula E that is our sustainability platform, some of our competitors in Formula 1 are also in Formula E. Participation in Extreme E is driven by the same considerations, and eSports attracts a younger audience.
Our event portfolio caters to partners who say “I love Formula 1, but I need activity in North America” or “I’m in North America, but I want to go global.” There are real examples: Arrow Electronics, title sponsor of the IndyCar program, is now a sponsor of our Formula 1 team. Google, our sponsor in Formula 1, has become a sponsor of our Extreme E team. Medallion, a sponsor of our Formula 1 team, sponsors our team in IndyCar.
If we didn’t have teams in other series, the Formula 1 team would earn less.”
