Russell: In the race we are comparable in pace to Aston Martin

George Russell, speaking of the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, has made no secret of the fact that Mercedes, like Monaco, intends to get ahead of Ferrari, but overall the team’s job this weekend is to move up to second place in the constructors’ race. Championship.

George Russell: “In Monaco, by the time of the pit stop, we actually had a good chance to get on the podium, after which I was able to put in a good first lap after the boxes, although I couldn’t really attack because of the yellow flags. But the track conditions were very difficult for everyone and of course it’s a shame that I lost two positions in the end and couldn’t finish in the top three.

Esteban Ocon certainly deserved the podium last weekend, but all this is in the past and now we are preparing for the Spanish Grand Prix.

When it comes to what positions our car allows us to claim, in Monaco there was a very noticeable difference in the W14’s work on Saturday and Sunday. In qualifying we were clearly behind Ferrari and Aston Martin, and in some situations we were also behind Alpine. But in the race they were already quite comparable to Aston Martin in terms of pace.

I think our car will pass a good test this weekend, and I would like to think that in Barcelona we are able to get ahead of Ferrari and also try to overtake Fernando – he is certainly going very fast now. In general, we will try to close the gap with Red Bull and move to the second line of the team standings.

It was impossible to really assess the effectiveness of new products in Monaco, although there were no unpleasant surprises there either, which in itself is a positive moment. So a truly updated car is only now being tested.”
