Alonso: I don’t think we will be fighting for the win in Barcelona

Last week in Monaco Fernando Alonso achieved the best result of the season and finished second. One step away from victory, but the Aston Martin driver is realistic about his chances this weekend.

Fernando Alonso «In Spain I feel the energy and support of the fans, but let’s be honest: I don’t think we can fight for the win. Red Bull have been dominating all season and I see no reason why they can’t win a double in Barcelona. But let’s see what we can do.

Before the start of any weekend, I set myself the task of squeezing the maximum out of the car, whatever position the battle will be for. Sometimes it’s seventh place, sometimes it’s a chance to fight for the podium.

Did we have any chances to win in Monaco? If we had a magic crystal, we’d probably behave differently. I had the opportunity to make a “free” pit stop, so the team gave me new slicks to assess the further development of the situation. But then the rain got heavier and I switched to intermediate tyres. We did what we did.

Anyway, second place in Monaco is a great result, and now everyone is talking about us doing something wrong. All teams strive for the ideal, but that is not always achievable, especially in such difficult circumstances as in Monaco.”
