Verstappen: We are unlikely to win all races

Max Verstappen won his fourth of six Grand Prix in Monaco last week. At the FIA press conference in Barcelona, the Red Bull Racing driver was asked how he estimates his team’s chances of winning all the remaining races of the season.

Max Verstappen: “I don’t know if last weekend was the best for me this season, but it certainly ended well. Before the trip to Monaco, we assumed that we were not waiting for the easiest weekend, but we still managed to perform well. The battle in qualifying turned out to be very tense and the race, as usual in Monaco, was chaotic.

I did a very long first stint on Medium tyres. Initially this was not in the plans, but I had to stay on track and see what Fernando Alonso would do. Then it started to rain and the race turned into chaos – not at all what you want when you’re in the lead. I didn’t want to take too many risks, but I also didn’t want to waste too much time.

Good race, but when I crossed the finish line I thought, “It’s good the weekend is over!” The stage turned out to be very intense, and now I’m looking forward to the start of the weekend in Barcelona, because here is a full-fledged circuit, where the Formula 1 car will really come to life.

Can we win all the races this year? At the moment it seems that this is possible, but in reality it is unlikely. At any time, something can go wrong – a descent or something else is possible. We may come to the track that is not suitable for the car, we may not be lucky in qualifying and we may make a mistake ourselves.

Dominance has always been present in Formula 1 – there is nothing new in it. The longer the regulation remains stable, the smaller the differences will be. Maybe this is exactly what we need. You have to wait a year or two before two or three teams compete for the title.”

Commenting on what’s new with the car this weekend, Max said: “Helmut Marko is excited about what’s new, but we will continue with our usual programme. There will be nothing extraordinary in these updates.

Usually all the novelties we put on the car work as expected, but it is important to find the right balance of the car. If we can do that, we’ll have a good weekend.”
