Formula 3: Marty takes pole position in Barcelona

Campos driver José-Maria Martí set the fastest time in Formula 3 qualifying at his home circuit in Barcelona. Taylor Barnard will start the race with him from the front row on Sunday.

Before qualifying, the clouds started to gather over the track, so the riders rushed to the first attempt. It took two laps to warm up the tyres, after which fast attempts began.

Hunter Yini was the first to set the fastest time, but after a few seconds ten riders went over his result at the same time. The battle for first place was between Fornaroli, Colapinto, Sosi, Beganovich and Paul Aron, who remained in the lead with a score of 1:28.369 seconds based on the first attempt. His lead over Fornaroli was more than a tenth.

Gabriele Bortoleto and Gabriele Mini, first and second in the individual standings, exaggerated the curb attack in their attempts, finishing the first attempt with tenth and eleventh fastest times respectively. Between them in the protocol is Nikita Bedrin.

Eighteen minutes before the end of the session, the riders returned for a second attempt. The scenario repeated itself – first two warm-up laps, then fast ones. Franco Colapinto led protocol for a while, but Aron, Marty, Montoya, and Barnard led him. According to the results of the attempt, Marty remained the leader – 1: 28.010 s. Bortoleto moved up to 7th, while Mini dropped back to 14th.

Eight minutes before the end of the qualifying time, the riders set off for the decisive series of fast laps. Marty improved the time (1:27.587 s), and for the second line there was a battle between Beganovich, Colapinto and Barnard. As a result, the driver Jenzer became second according to the results of qualifying.

Championship leader Bortoleto qualified sixth and Mini eighteenth. Nikita Bedrin showed the fourteenth time.

On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. For example, Zach O’Sullivan will start tomorrow’s race from pole position. Luke Browning starts with him from the front row.
