In the qualifications in Barcelona, Valtteri Bottas fell out of contention already in the first session, and his partner Guanyu Zhou moved into the second and qualified 13th …
Guanyu Zhou (13th): “I drove a clear round in the second part of qualifying, a few tenths were not enough to reach the final. I gave it my all but because of the red flags in the first session we didn’t have a fresh set of soft tires and when the gaps were so small this was enough.
Today I was able to get to work with the custom car and I hope to transfer this feeling to tomorrow to catch up. I expect that thanks to new tires we will be much closer to some of the competitors ahead of us. Every opportunity should be seized.”
Valttery Bottas (16th): “Maybe there was only one positive thing today – it seems that the new things we tried last week are working – during training I felt the difference.
Unfortunately it was not possible to demonstrate the speed of our car in qualifying. I couldn’t achieve the same grip on the tarmac as I did during training. The car slipped, preventing its potential from being realized. The changeable weather didn’t help either.
On my last attempt on the pit lap I had to stop for about ten seconds after Turn 12 to let the cars pass on the fast lap and the tires went cold.
I hope we improve tomorrow, go faster and can compete for top ten places.
