In the first part of qualifying, Fernando Alonso flew into the gravel and damaged the underside of the car. Aston Martin mechanics attempted to repair it during the session but were unable to fully resolve the problem.
Lance Stroll finished sixth and qualified ahead of his teammate for the first time of the season.
Lance walk (6th): “Good qualifying, in which we managed to find a rhythm. The car drove well – a noticeable improvement from yesterday. I am happy with the settings we chose last night.
The battle in the peloton is incredibly exciting and some riders qualified in unusual positions, so it will be an interesting race. I think we will have great opportunities tomorrow, so we will study telemetry and prepare strategic options to be ready to make the most of the opportunities.”
Fernando Alonso (9th): “Damage to the soil cost me a few tenths, no more. The mechanics did a good job fixing it every time I pitted.
The last lap in the qualifying final wasn’t bad, but I went out on the wet track in turn 10 and lost pace. Saturday was not good for me, I hope Sunday will be better.
Now it seems that this time the podium is very far away. We have to do everything we can to finish in the top five. We have good pace, low tire wear. Let’s see if it gets easier to overtake without the last chicane. Maybe something can win back through strategy.
