Carlos Sainz qualified second on his home circuit in Barcelona, less than five-tenths behind pole-holder Max Verstappen. According to Carlos, he couldn’t count on more.
His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc did not finish the first part and only showed the 19th fastest time. Immediately after the session, the Monegask suggested that the lack of speed was due to technical problems with the car.
Carlo Sainz (2nd): “Qualifying turned out to be exciting in very difficult conditions, but I managed to pass the first and second part without any problems. It was probably one of the toughest weather qualifiers I’ve had competing in Barcelona, but I managed.
I have the best possible starting position, so now let’s focus on how we will compete tomorrow.
In my attempt I did my best. It’s a very close fight between us, McLaren, Alpine, Mercedes and Aston Martin – we’re all in the same group this weekend.”
Charles Leclerc (19th): “I have no answer. All I can say is that the car was uncontrollable in the left corners. In the right-hand corners, the car behaved much the same as this morning, but in the left-hand corners… We have to analyze everything and find the reason, because the result was far from what we expected.
I thought the problem was in the first set of tires, but after switching to the second set nothing has changed. I had no clutch in left turns. We have to check the car, but I will be very surprised if it turns out that everything is okay with it. In the third practice session in difficult conditions I was happy with the car, but in qualifying it wasn’t.
During the red flags I almost lost control of the car and crashed into the gravel on the left turn. This is very, very strange behavior – you need to check the car.
