Grand Prix trackunder Spain this year has undergone minor changes, as its layout reverts to that used before 2006. The main difference is the removal of the slow chicane in the third sector, making the 7.8km course shorter and faster than last year.

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is well known to teams and drivers as it has been on the calendar since 1991 and is a popular pre-season testing site. It consists of a combination of high, medium and low speed turns, changing direction with a long start-finish straight. There’s a bit of everything here, making it the perfect place to test.

The frequent change in wind direction at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also makes balancing difficult. Usually, a tailwind in the morning on the main straight creates a headwind in high-speed corners. This provides better stability to the car. Then during the day it tends to turn in the opposite direction, and the pilots have to adapt.

According to the weather forecast, rain is forecast.

Pirelli has chosen its hardest tire compounds for the weekend: C1 is hard white, C2 is medium yellow and C3 is soft red. The compounds became more stable, they could withstand the higher speeds and increased downforce of the latest F1 cars.

Heading into the weekend, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen leads the 2023 championship with 144 points. Red Bull co-driver Sergio Pérez is second with 105 points and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso is third with 93 points. Red Bull leads the constructors’ championship with 249 points. Aston Martin is second with 120 points and Mercedes-Benz AMG is third with 119 points. Winner last year in Spain was Verstappen, who played for Red Bull.
