Hamilton and Wolff are negotiating a contract

At Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton finished second behind only Max Verstappen and revealed after the race that he met with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff on Monday to discuss details of a future contract.

“Nothing has been signed so far, but tomorrow we have a meeting with Toto and I hope we can agree on something,” the seven-time world champion said at a press conference after the Spanish Grand Prix. “We’ve had quite a few meetings, and this is another one. But according to my speech today, it is clear that all this (the situation with contract negotiations) does not affect me in any way, although somewhere on a subconscious level I always think about it.

Once the negotiations are over, we can think about the future and I will continue to work as closely as possible with the team. I see that everyone is still hungry for success, and today’s podium is a very special achievement. I am very happy to see the joy on the faces of the people I have been working with for so long.

It’s time we started developing a car for 2024. This season Max Verstappen continues to win, but we need to focus on next year to compete with him on an equal footing. Personally I feel like I’m in great shape, pretty healthy and I think today’s race was very confident.

I want to perform at a high level for as long as I can – as long as I can. But I want to take the place that Max has taken today, or at least fight him. I am therefore fully focused on achieving this. It won’t happen soon, but there is time.”
