Unlike last season, when hardly any hard tires were used in Barcelona due to the heat and excessive stiffness, today the teams used all three rubber compounds.
Mario Isol, Pirelli: “Today we saw a race with all three compounds on a very demanding track. 41.6% of all laps were driven on Hard, 30.6% on Medium and 27.9% on Soft.
Our decision to introduce a new C1 line-up this year worked, because last year the drivers had to make three pit stops, today two was enough for most.
Compared to our predictions for the race, the Medium compound proved to be more competitive, in part because track temperatures were significantly cooler than last year’s race.
The first analysis showed that the degradation of all formulations was lower, even at the mildest C3. Mercedes’ early stints were a good example, with Russell completing 25 laps and Hamilton 24, or Alonso’s average 25 lap stint with plenty of fuel but at a good pace.
Pirelli stays in Barcelona, next week we have two very important tire test days for next season. The program is aimed at developing formulations that can be used without preheating.”
