Yuki Tsunoda finished ninth in Barcelona, but after adding five seconds to his time for pushing Guanyu Zhou off the track, he dropped to twelfth in the final standings. His AlphaTauri teammate Nick de Vries also failed to score any points – the driver from the Netherlands lost a lap to the leader and finished 14th.
Yuki Tsunoda (12th): “I am very disappointed and upset. I believe I received a very heavy penalty for pushing another rider off the track, but I have to accept it. I left a little space, but I still think it was still enough.
On the positive side, the team has done a fantastic job of solving the brake issues, allowing me to fight for points for the first time in two race weekends. The car gets better and the hard work pays off.
The weekend is over and now I’m looking forward to the next race in Canada.”
Nick deVries (14th): “Of course the team wants more. Even though I had a good start, I ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, got stuck in the corner and lost too many positions, and then I got stuck behind the other cars. We tried to cut but I couldn’t catch up and lost too much time.
Some episodes of the race turned out to be good – in the last 25 laps on medium tires I showed a competitive pace. Now next time you have to try to put all the ingredients together.
This weekend we were competitive from the start so I think the team has made progress in working with the machine. In Canada we have a different type of circuit, but I am sure we will continue to improve and take every opportunity.
