At the Spanish Grand Prix, Ferrari took 10 points, the team’s worst result of the season. Carlos Sainz, who started second, finished fifth, while teammate Charles Leclerc scored no points in eleventh.
Ferrari brought technical innovations to Barcelona, but judging by the results, they fell short of expectations, and both drivers noted the lack of speed during the race.
Carlo Sainz (5th): “Today I had to put in a lot more effort than in qualifying. Too bad this is not visible in the result. The situation is such that the speed on the distance of the race and the speed in fast corners is our weak side.
Unfortunately, this track has very rough asphalt and a configuration with a lot of fast corners, which is why we had so many problems. I did my best, but unfortunately fifth place was the most I could hope for.
We have identified weaknesses, we know exactly what we lack in speed. We have to keep working, but it will take time to rectify the situation. Mercedes showed today that it has made a good step forward. They can be our guide.
We are doing our best, the team is united and everyone in Maranello works with full dedication. Apparently we brought updates to the car on the most unsuitable track for us.
Charles Leclerc (11th): “I don’t understand what we’re doing wrong, but we’re definitely doing something wrong with the tyres. On Hard on the last stretch, the car behaved completely differently than on other trains. The team and I have to understand the reasons because in several races we have a very nervous car and today was no better.
Today the problems turned out to be the opposite of the ones that prevented me from qualifying. On Saturday there were problems with the behavior of the rear of the car, but we rebuilt it and everything was fine, but the problems started with the front – it behaved very strangely.
I’ve been talking to other riders all weekend and we all agree that the tires have a very narrow working range. We had more problems than the others with this weather at this track. We have to figure everything out.”
