Fernando Alonso: We just didn’t have enough speed

In Barcelona, Fernando Alonso failed to reach the podium for the second time this season. After the Spanish Grand Prix, the two-time world champion spoke about the possible reasons for not the most impressive results.

Fernando Alonso (7th): “We lacked speed, at the beginning of the race we were not fast enough on soft tires and at the end it was repeated with hard tyres. I don’t think we made any tactical miscalculations, but only the pace left something to be desired. Now we need to understand why, and try to outperform in Canada.

People ask me about the sharp moment while overtaking Esteban Ocon, but from my point of view everything was fine there. Likewise, I was ahead of Yuki Tsunoda and Guanyu Zhou, and it seemed to me that all these overtakes were about the same. Everything looked normal from the cockpit.

At the end of the race I was on fresher tires and was able to lap a few tenths faster than a partner, but this was not enough to get closer to him. Yesterday I already broke a bottom of my car and today I didn’t want to break another one. I also didn’t want Lance to damage the underside of his AMR23 while trying to defend himself, so I warned the team in advance that I wouldn’t attack him.

It doesn’t matter to us if we finish 7th and 6th or if I finish 6th and he finishes 7th. It was important to just get to the finish line. But it worries me that Mercedes is ahead of us in the Constructors’ Championship. The riders of this team are very stable and from our point of view they have a very fast car. They are very strong opponents.”

Lance walk (6th): “On the first lap I had an interesting duel with Lewis Hamilton and I started the maneuver early because I knew there was free space on the track and I expected him to give me some space. He really went away, which put me in a good position for turn 5 and was able to keep it.

But then, after about five laps, we started having serious pace issues. The rubber degradation turned out to be higher than we expected, and it seems that the cars around us on the track had no such problems. So we have to try to understand the reasons for this before the next race.

Today we earned points by finishing in 6th and 7th place, although we had hoped for more. Now I will prepare for the Canadian Grand Prix, because this is my home race.”
