During the race in Barcelona, Max Verstappen was shown a black and white flag as a warning of trespassing. If the Red Bull Racing driver had again exceeded the limits, he would have received a five-second time penalty.
To avoid this, the team asked Max to slow down, but instead the reigning world champion kept attacking to show the best lap, and he did so successfully. Responding to the Austrian ORF’s air of Verstappen’s actions, Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko said it was pointless to argue with Max.
Helmut Marko: “A possible penalty kick worried us much less than the fans. Max was doing a fast lap when his tires were in much worse condition than Sergio Pérez’s during his fast lap.
It is usually not customary to take risks in such situations, but it is impossible to convince Max. You can’t get mad at that.”
