José Maria Martí won the Formula 3 race in Barcelona on Sunday. For the Campos rider, this victory was the third of the season and enabled him to take second place in the individual classification.
José-Maria Martí took advantage of pole position and kept the lead at the start, although Taylor Barnard actively attacked the Spaniard, went off the track in turn two, came back and nearly took the lead in turn three. Championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto passed Paul Aron to move up to fifth.
At the back of the fourth corner in the battle for ninth place there was a collision between Luke Browning and Leonardo Fornaroli. For Luc, the race ended due to a broken suspension, while Leonardo continued the race at the end of the peloton. The safety car took to the road.
The race resumed on the seventh lap of twenty-five. This time Marty confidently kept the lead, preventing Barnard from attacking. In the battle for ninth place, Oliver Goethe got ahead of Zach O’Sullivan. Marty tried to create a lead over the pack by showing the best lap.
Yellow flags appeared on the track again on the tenth lap. In the second corner between Rafael Villagomez and Hunter Yini there was contact, after which Yini stayed on the track for a moment, but then continued, slowly returned to the pits and retired.
On the eleventh lap before the first corner, Franco Colapinto overtook Barnard for second. On the next lap, Taylor lost another position, missing Dino Beganovich in the straight.
On the sixteenth lap, the stewards penalized Tommy Smith, who was in 22nd place at the time, for five seconds for violating the track boundaries. Around the same time, Gabriele Mini was penalized for improperly returning to the track after leaving it in turn two.
On lap seventeen, Bortoleto attacked Barnard before the first turn and moved into fourth. On the same lap, but already in the fifth corner, Taylor was overtaken by Paul Aron.
Exiting the final corner, Barnard made a mistake and went wide into the gravel, which Marie Boya took advantage of. Sebastian Montoya tried to overtake Taylor in the straight but Barnard retook his position into the first corner. Before the finish, however, both Montoya and O’Sullivan managed to get ahead of Barnard.
On lap nineteen, Oliver Goethe hit Grégoire Saucy’s front wing with his front wing and his left rear wheel punctured, leaving the ART driver with no points chance. The stewards gave Goethe a ten-second penalty.
Leonardo Fornaroli returned to the pits due to technical problems with the car. Hugh Barter received a five-second time penalty for repeatedly breaking the track.
José Maria Marti confidently took the race to victory, leaving the best lap behind him. Together with him, MP Motorsport driver Franco Colapinto and Prema representative Dino Beganovic climbed to the podium.
Championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto finished fourth. Nikita Bedrin, who earned the first prize point of the season a day earlier thanks to opponents’ fines, finished 11th in Sunday’s race in Barcelona.
The next round of the Formula 3 season will take place in Spielberg, Austria, from June 30 to July 2.
