In Melbourne, the McLaren team had the best race of the season ahead of them: thanks to Lando Norris’ fifth and Daniel Ricciardo’s sixth, they earned 18 points and climbed from eighth to fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship. McLaren is pleased with the result and expects to build on the success in the coming races.
Lando Norris (5th): “Good flight. I didn’t give my best in the early laps, but the team finished in high positions – I don’t think we could have done better. Mercedes had a much faster pace than us today, so we are happy with the result.
The team earned a lot of points, had nice pit stops and showed progress. We will write down what we learned today and try to use this information in the next races.
Daniel Riccardo (6th): “The weekend was better than the previous one, which is positive for the team. I’m happy with the progress and the result – I think we did everything we could. The first half of the race was successful, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
In the second stint I lacked speed on the hard tyres. Because of this, I am a little behind, but it is necessary to find out the reason. I will continue to work, but overall the weekend went smoothly. I’m happy to have earned the first points of the season in the home race, which pleased the fans who came to the stands.
We leave Melbourne in a good mood. It’s been four years since I left this job in good spirits.”
Andreas Seidli, Team Principal: “For the first time this season we have scored points with two cars. Excellent team result – thank you to everyone who worked in the pits, at the base and our colleagues from Mercedes HPP. It’s nice to see that we have confirmed the progress made in the race this weekend.
Special thanks to Lando and Daniel for their excellent work this weekend – they got the most out of the car. I can’t help but mention our mechanics, who brilliantly spent two pit stops. For us today’s result will be the motivation to keep working hard to improve the car.
As always Melbourne was a great location for the race. The fact that Daniel is playing for us has been added to the support team this weekend. It’s great that we were able to please the fans who have supported us. Thank you Australia!
