Pirelli tested tires for the 2024 season on Tuesday and Wednesday in Barcelona together with Mercedes and Ferrari, which can be used in thermal covers without preheating.
A total of 617 laps were completed in two days: Charles Leclerc – 167 laps, Mick Schumacher – 152 laps, George Russell – 151 laps and Carlos Sainz – 147 laps. The Ferrari drivers showed the best time – on Tuesday Charles Leclerc completed a lap in 1:18.197 s, on Wednesday Carlos Sainz in 1:16.638 s. George Russell and Mick Schumacher showed times of 1:18.400 s and 1:18.974 s respectively.
Mario Isola, head of the Pirelli racing division, summed up the work on the Spanish circuit: “We spent two days with very important tests, collecting a lot of information that will help us choose the best solutions for next year. In terms of construction, we still need to fine-tune some details, and during these tests, the main focus was on working with connections, especially those that will form the centerline in 2024.
All work with rubber took place without preheating using thermal covers. During the process we tested some interesting solutions and we will now analyze all the information gathered for the next test, which will take place at Silverstone after the British Grand Prix.
We will then take stock of the months of work and provide the FIA, Formula 1 and teams with a complete picture that will help them make the best decisions using all the information available.”
